What is Pediatric Ophthalmology?

Pediatric ophthalmology is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that deals specifically with the diagnosis and treatment of eye problems in children. It focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and management of eye diseases and abnormalities in children from birth to adulthood. Common pediatric ophthalmology conditions include strabismus (misalignment of the eyes), congenital cataracts, amblyopia (lazy eye), ptosis (droopy eyelid) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).

Pediatric ophthalmologists use specialized tests, such as ocular motility tests and visual evoked potentials, to assess a child’s vision. Treatment often includes glasses or contact lenses, eye drops, corrective eye surgery, and vision therapy. Proper diagnosis and treatment of vision problems in children is important to ensure normal visual development. In some cases, untreated vision problems can lead to permanent vision loss.
